I didn't actually remember anything from the book. I vaguely recalled the concept of souls in animals but that was it. I had no recollection of the main characters or their connection. This is clearly a sequel as earlier events are referenced quite often but I found I could read it just fine on its own. I'm sure it's better back to back but coming from the standpoint of being totally new to the series (like my memory was) I found it wonderful.

If you make the time, its worth reading and don't worry about the first book.

I'm glad you've posted this review. I am having the same dilemma you had before you read this book. I loved the first one and wanted to read this sequel, but it's been so many years since I read the first book, I've forgotten a lot of what happened. I'm glad that you found that you didn't have to re-read the first book before reading this. In theory it would be nice to re-read but in practice I have so little time for reading these days that I'm reluctant to re-read when I have so many other books on the tbr pile.

Actually that means I shouldn't actually buy this book either! I think I will though because this is a great author and I love her world building.

Thanks for a great review and for setting my mind at rest :).

I've done a lot of post-event massages on triathletes and those who've done ironman (is the plural ironmen? XD). They typically come in one to three days after the event. Depending on how soon after the competition it is, the techniques used should change a bit, since you're dealing with the body in different states. :) ;If you're super sore, the therapist should be using only firm pressure (not deep), and a lot of broad strokes that are more along the lines of Swedish and Lymphatic techniques. Lots of compression (simple, steady pressing), effleurage (smooth broad movements toward the heart), and petrissage (kneading). You want to move things around but not do deep work that might cause more trauma post-event. Your body's already been through enough. ;)

Hope that helps if you're gonna get a massage soon! It can be really nice a few days post-event while your body is still recovering. Just make sure you hydrate like a mad woman!

I'm shocked you got through 9 books of the series in a month! With no burnout. That is a seriously impressive goal. Plus while the 12th came out this month it's not going anywhere so you will catch up pretty soon no doubt.

I get what you mean about sleeping at night and not reading. I'm way too tired to get my brain to read at night these days so usually I sneak it in on lunch breaks and sometimes I get about 30 min in the morning. With the weather so nice I'm thinking of planning a cabin weekend where i can read on the deck and do nothing else! Wonder if I'd stick to that.

Well I didn't get as much done as I'd like (I was hoping for a new author from each publisher) but if I open my timeframe up to the rest of the year then it's more likely I'll get it done.

I need a massage! My brother recently did a half ironman and he said he was wrecked for almost 4 days after. He said getting the massage 2 wks after helped.
